Task 1.3: Reflections - Thursday, 26 January 2023
Online teaching is a whole new world for upcoming teachers. It tends to be difficult as you need to find your way around teaching the whole class, managing the whole class, and to just create a safe virtual classroom environment space.
Online teaching can also be tricky as you are not able to experience the emotions the learners are going through in that moment, through online teaching you just need to assume that all learners are okay and do not need much assistance.
Through teaching online I was able to make use of virtual tools such as PowerPoint and Blackboard collaborate, it was while navigating through blackboard collaborate that I learnt how to further make use of the site as well as I was able to acknowledge the time it takes during online sessions to allow for everyone to connect, to answer the questions, to switch on their mics and use the tools provided.
Going forward I would change my teaching style to be a lot more interactive and as hands-on as possible, however still taking the constraints into consideration. I would need to slower my teaching pace to allow for everyone to participate throughout the lesson.
When choosing the tools to teach this lesson on 2D shapes, I thought I made use of the correct tools by making use of a PowerPoint slide that the learners were able to visualize what they were working with as well as they were able to interact through seeing the slides presented.
This experience has allowed me to learn about virtual teaching as it has become a reality in most schools since COVID-19 has been around. It is important to go and further educate myself on virtual teaching as it is part of the current education trends.
Thanks Ashley for the fun lesson. 😊
You were most attentive to your learners and ensured everyone participated. I agree with the comment below - you ensure active participation by encouraging learners to look for shapes in their homes. Your slides were also engaging and included examples of everyday shapes. Yes I agree you needed to slower your pace especially when covering the content. Also to ensure learners understood the shape and characteristics- perhaps allow learners to share their camera briefly to show you the objects they found and point out the characteristics.
Overall great work, Thanks
Tasneem
Hello Ashley,
I enjoyed your lesson as you used examples around me. The fact that you made us look for shapes/objects around us makes the teaching& learning more practical and it will be easy for learners to recall shapes.
